There are many different kinds of magic on this island, all of which have their own advantages and disadvantages against their fellow schools. Many of them have been known to produce extremely powerful attacks when combined with the powers of the other schools.

Special bracelets and amulets have been created to allow Earth Ponies and Pegasi to take advantage of the magical properties that rest within them, similar to a unicorns horn. More powerful bracelets and amulets become available to the pony as their level increases. This is elaborated on in greater detail on the page "Magic for other Races".

There's the seven primary schools that ponies are placed into by the Personality Test when they first enroll into HoovenStrum, and these are broken up into three categories:

SPIRITUAL

Darkness

Mystery

BOTH

Equality

On top of that, there's the three schools of Astral magic, which features magic spells that share similar powers to Princess Celestia and Princess Luna. Ponies may learn about these spells upon reaching Level 30.

There is also the dreaded Shadow Magic, which despite the fact that Melody has removed the corruptive nature of this branch of magic, still manages to inflict fear and dread into the hearts of even the bravest of ponies. This could be due to the fact that overuse of Shadow Magic often results in the destruction of the users soul, so they must practice moderation. Ponies may ONLY learn how to use Shadow Magic upon completing the schools Master course and receiving a scholarship, and reaching Level 50.

The school is aware of the presence of other kinds of magic ( such as Twilight Sparkle's friendship magic ), and the teachers and Melody are eager to learn about these new kinds of magic and figure out how they can be applied to their everyday lives.
